DMV Address Change

You must change your address with the DMV if you move to a new address in the same state. Most states allow you to change your address online if you move to a new address within the same state. Alternatively, you can also find an address change form in our DMV Form Directory.

If you are just moving within the same state, you need to visit your closest DMV office location and pay your fees. Next, the DMV will mail you a hard copy of your updated drivers license or registration.

The process is different when you move to a new state. You’ll need to apply for a new driver’s license and registration with your updated address. To get a license in a new state, visit your nearby DMV office.

What if I Have Questions?

All state DMVs have customer service numbers that you can call with questions. However, these customer service numbers often have short hours and long wait times. Fortunately, most states provide a customer service email address. It may take a few business days to get a response. At least you won’t have to wait on hold for hours!

How to Change Your Address with the DMV

Changing your address with the DMV is easy if you are moving in-state.

If you are moving in-state, all you have to do is go to your state’s DMV website and access their online DMV services. In most cases, you will be able to instantly update your address online.

The process is much more involved when you are moving to a new state. Generally, you will need to apply for a drivers license and register your vehicle.

If you are moving to a new state, you will need to get a new address and registration by visiting a DMV office in person. You will have to submit identity documents, residency documents, and a vision test to get a new license. Some states may require a written test. Of course, you will also have to pay various fees.
