A driver’s license or state-issued ID is an accepted form of identification and is intended to show your official state of residence. Your state of residence is where you pay state and local taxes, including the Illinois income tax on annual earnings when you are an Illinois resident. You also might have local taxes to pay based on your official residence in Illinois. When moving within, to or from the state of Illinois, you need to do an official change of address.

What Are the Basics?

Whenever you change your residence due to a move to, from or within the state of Illinois, you need to change your address on your driver’s license. The Illinois Secretary of State (ISOS) requires motorists to provide notice of a change in address or name within 10 days of its occurrence.

How Do I Change My Address If I Am Moving Within Illinois?

Illinois residents can do a change of address online or at an ISOS services facility. The address change applies to the address on listed on an Illinois driver’s license or state ID. You also need to change the registration addresses for every titled and registered vehicle in Illinois, including motorcycles, boats and RVs. You must bring one piece of acceptable proof of residency, which could include a copy of a lease or mortgage, utility bill or a pay stub showing the new address in Illinois.

How Do I Change My Address If I Am Moving to Illinois?

The ISOS requires notification within 10 days of a change of address, including when moving to Illinois. Because you will obtain an Illinois license for the first time, you will need to surrender your old license from your prior state of residence. You can do that at a local ISOS Services Facility and must bring four pieces of acceptable ID. ISOS allows 10 days to initiate a change of address after moving to Illinois but does not refuse requests made past the 10-day requirement.

How Do I Change My Address If I Am Moving From Illinois?

If you are moving from Illinois, you will need to contact the respective licensing agency in the state or commonwealth in which you will become a permanent resident. Virtually all states have a Secretary of State that handles residency changes and issuing new driver’s licenses to new residents. You will have to surrender your Illinois license in your new state of residence and get a new one based on the respective state laws.

It is important to officially end your Illinois residence by establishing residence in another state so that you are subjected to the correct amount of state income tax. A move out of Illinois almost certainly will trigger a change in auto insurance rates and other costs related to where you live.
