What Are the Basics?

When you are moving into or out of Indiana, you need to inform the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. You can do this in person or online only. If you need to update your main residency address, you will need to do so in person, but mailing addresses may be adjusted online.

Whenever you move, you must let the Indiana BMV know within 30 days.

How Do I Change My Address If I Am Moving Within Indiana?

If you are moving within Indiana, you will need to submit your change in address online through the myBMV.com website or in person. The myBMV website allows you to change your mailing address.

If you need to update your official residence, then you will need to go to the local BMV office and submit two documents that show your new address, such as two new utility bills or a rental agreement.

How Long Do I Have to Complete This?

You have 30 days from the time of your move to change your address with the BMV. For mailing addresses, you may also want to forward your mail by contacting the U.S. Postal Service.

How Do I Change My Address If I Am Moving To Indiana from Another State?

If you are coming to Indiana for the first time from out of state, you will need to transfer in your old license. You need to do this within two months or 60 days.

When you do this, you should apply for a new license and surrender your current license. There is a driver’s license fee. If you are under 75 years old, you will pay $17.50 for a new license. Those between 75 and 84 pay $11, and all other individuals pay $7. Your license, when under 75, is valid for six years. For those between 75 and 84, the license is good for three years. Those 85 and older have a license valid for two years.

Since you will be updating your main residency to Indiana, it is in your best interests to go to the local Bureau of Motor Vehicles to update your information. Though there is online access, it does not allow you to change your residency, only your mailing address.

When you go to the BMV in person, make sure you have documents to prove your address and who you are. Bring your old license or ID. To complete the license change, you will need the following documents:

  • A check or money order for $9
  • Two documents to prove your new address in Indiana
  • One document to prove that you are living in the United States legally
  • One document to prove your Social Security number
  • One document to prove your identity
How Long Do I Have to Complete This?

You must complete the change of address within 60 days of your move.
