What Are the Basics?
When you move to a new state, you will need to let the Office of Motor Vehicles know about that move. You will need to go to the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles if you are moving to a new address within Louisiana. You have 10 days to go there with your current identification, proof of insurance and payment for your updated address change if you already live in Louisiana or up to
30 days if you’re coming in from out of state.
How Do I Change My Address If I Am Moving Within Louisiana?
If you will be moving within Louisiana, you will need to inform the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles in person within 10 days of your move. When you go to the OMV, please bring your:
- Current Louisiana driver’s license or personal ID
- Payment for the license and registration fees. This is $12 for the vehicle registration and $17 to $23 for your driver’s license
- Proof of insurance
When you come to the OMV, the OMV may want to see proof of your new address to prevent fraud. Before your appointment, you can call to verify the kind of proof you can use. Normally, a utility bill sent to the new address is acceptable.
How Long Do I Have to Complete This?
You have 10 days to inform the OMV about a move from one area of Louisiana to another.
How Do I Change My Address If I Am Moving To Louisiana from Another State?
If you are moving to Louisiana from another state, then you need to go to the local OMV to transfer your out-of-state license within 30 days of your move. To do this, you need to go to the OMV in person. When you go to the OMV, remember to bring these items:
- Your out-of-state driver’s license or record, ID or other identifying information
- Your Social Security number (and card if you have it)
- Proof of maintaining auto insurance that is valid within Louisiana
- Payment for the licensing and registration fees ($12 for registration, up to $23 for a license)
- Additional proof of your identity, such as a passport or current utility bill for your new address
Upon this first visit to the Louisiana OMV, you will be expected to pass a vision test. This vision test is required of all drivers who will be getting a license in the state. If your license in another state has already expired, you will need to go through the driving and writing examinations as if you’re getting your license for the first time, so it’s best to make sure to get a new license before yours expires.
