To get your criminal records or those belonging to another person, you need to follow specific steps and fill out the appropriate authorization forms. Here is what you should know about your records in Louisiana.

What Are Criminal Records?

Criminal records contain all of your past criminal history. This is also known as a person’s rap sheet. The sheet will list convictions that were recorded locally by parish or under state jurisdictions. Federal convictions may also be included.

Your criminal records may include:

  • Acquitted charges
  • Dismissed charges
  • Current charges
  • Pending charges
  • Warrants
  • Former arrests

Any misdemeanors or felonies will also be listed on this report.

How Are Criminal Records Used?

Usually, your criminal records will be reviewed as a part of a background search.

Background checks are used for purposes such as:

  • For employment
  • To verify them for renting a property
  • For school admission
  • Security clearance
  • To purchase a weapon
  • Military service
  • International travel
  • Fostering
  • Adoption
  • For law enforcement

This is why it’s important that your criminal record is accurate.

How Can Someone Access Your Criminal Records?

The Bureau of Criminal Identification and Information oversees a system called the Automated Fingerprint Identification System. This system is used alongside mugshots and other criminal history information to track individuals in the system. The BCII also maintains the Louisiana Computerized Criminal History system. This system is available to all criminal justice agencies.

General Public

The general public may check the Louisiana State Police page for an online background check. Users must log in or sign up to use the system. In some cases, they will need to have permission to search background check records.

Sex Crimes

The State Sex Offender and Child Predator Registry is provided by the Louisiana State Police. This site allows you to search for offenders. You may search by parish to locate individuals who are on the state sex offender list. You may also search by known address, city, state, zip code, or internet name/email. You may search for non-compliant individuals or by phone number.

Sex crimes are not protected under law, so anyone with a history will be listed on the search. This search is available to the public.

How Can You Request a Criminal Record?

To request a criminal record, you should go to the Louisiana State Police’s website and select the correct background check forms you need based on your specific circumstances and relationship with the person you’d like to have searched. An internet background check or manual check is available. If you need an authorization form, this is available on the site. Employers can also use a general disclosure form to get access to criminal records about someone they’d like to hire.

In Louisiana, criminal records can be searched through an internet background checkoffered by the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Information, which is located at:
