What Are the Basics?

When you move, regardless of whether you are moving within the state or interstate, you must notify the Maine Bureau of Vehicles to change your address on your driver’s license and vehicle registration.

How Do I Change My Address If I Am Moving Within Maine?

You can change your address on your driver’s license online. You will need to have your Zip code, driver’s license number, Social Security number, new address, and email address for confirmation. You can change your address on your registration online only if you’ve moved within the same town.

You may also change your address in person or by mail. The change of address is free unless you want a new license. To change your address by mail, send a notarized letter with your new address to the State of Maine, Bureau of Motor Vehicles, 29 State House Station, Augusta, ME 04330-0029.

To renew in person, bring proof of your new address to the branch office.

How Long Do I Have to Complete This?

You must complete the registration change within 10 days of your move and the driver’s license within 30 days.

How Do I Change My Address If I Am Moving To Maine from Another State?

If you are moving to Maine from another state, you will need to obtain a Maine driver’s license and registration. This must be done in person. You’ll need to bring with you a document proving your legal residence, legal status, Social Security card, and valid out-of-state license. You’ll need a vision test for the license.

To register your vehicle, you’ll have to pay the excise tax at your local municipal building. If your municipality participates in the state’s registration program, you can also register your car there, as well. Otherwise, you’ll register the car at a BVM office. You’ll need to bring

  • Your prior out-of-state registration certificate
  • Your prior out-of-state title (for vehicle model years 1995 and newer)
  • Evidence of insurance (ID card, policy, or binder)
  • The white and yellow copies of your registration application and excise tax receipt
How Long Do I Have to Complete This?

You must complete the change of address within 30 days of your move.

How Do I Change My Address If I Am Moving From Maine?

Maine does not require that you notify the state about your driver’s license since Maine will cancel your license once you obtain one in your new state of residence. You also are not required to notify them about the registration. You are, however, required to return your plates. You fill out a Plate Cancellation Request form and have it notarized, and mail it with your plates to:

State of Maine, Bureau of Motor Vehicles, 29 State House Station, Augusta, ME 04330-0029.

Where Do I Call With Questions?

The number for the Maine BMV is 207-624-9000.
