Selling a Vehicle in Mississippi 101

The vast majority of drivers in the state of Mississippi will sell a vehicle at some point. There is plenty that you should know. It is a good idea to give the buyer a Bill of Sale when you sell the vehicle. You should also keep in mind that you cannot transfer license plates in the state of Mississippi. You will have to get new license plates for a different vehicle.

Signing Over the Vehicle Title in Mississippi

There is quite a bit that remains the same no matter where you sell your vehicle. In the state of Mississippi, one of the things that remains the same is that you have to sign over the vehicle title in order to sell a vehicle. You can simply sign the back of the title and hand it over to the buyer to complete the transaction. You cannot sell a vehicle without a vehicle in the state of Mississippi.

What If You Lost the Vehicle Title?

It is certainly a concern if you happen to lose the vehicle title. However, you can still move forward with selling the vehicle after you follow some steps. As previously mentioned, you cannot legally sell a vehicle in the state of Mississippi without the vehicle title. As a result, if you lose the title, you will have to get a duplicate title from the state of Mississippi. You can do so by filling out the Mississippi Application for Replacement Certificate of Title. After you have completed this form, you will have to submit it to your local tax collector’s office in order to get the duplicate title.

Do You Need to Provide a Bill of Sale?

Some states require you to provide a bill of sale when you sell a vehicle. Mississippi only requires you to provide a bill of sale when you sell a vehicle in certain circumstances. However, it is a good idea to provide a Bill of Sale anyway. A buyer might want it for their own records and they might want it as proof of the transaction for tax purposes. In any case, a Bill of Sale must include the following information:

  • Date of sale
  • Odometer reading
  • Year, make, and model of vehicle
  • VIN
  • Complete vehicle description
  • The full name and address of the buyer
  • The full name and address of the seller
  • The vehicle’s purchase price
  • Signatures of both the seller and the buyer

Fees for Title/Registration in Mississippi

There are some fees that are associated with selling a vehicle in the state of Mississippi. You do have to pay some fees for transferring a vehicle title, which is part of the selling process. If you need a duplicate title to sell your vehicle, you will have to pay a $9 fee. If you need a new title for some reason, you will also have to pay a $9 fee as well.
