New Jersey DMV Locations

There are several types of MVC (New Jersey’s equivalent of the DMV) locations in New Jersey, including licensing centers, vehicle centers, road testing locations, inspection locations, and regional service centers. Vehicle and licensing services used to be offered at the same locations, but New Jersey has split the services some locations offer to make social distancing easier during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is unknown when or if the state will go back to offering vehicle and licensing services at the same locations.

Some locations fall into more than one category because they offer more than one type of service. It can be difficult for drivers to figure out which location they may need to select to get the specific services they are looking for. Licensing Centers

There are currently 23 licensing centers in New Jersey. As the name suggests, licensing centers only process transactions related to driver’s licenses. They will not process transactions related to vehicle titles or registrations.

Licensing centers will process first-time licenses, permits, and non-driver IDs. First-time license seekers will be able to get a REAL ID. Licensing centers will continue to issue CDLs and temporary visa-restricted licenses (TVRs), along with any other renewal licenses that cannot be requested online. Drivers will be able to convert their licenses to REAL ID-compliant licenses. Any other renewals, changes of address, or license replacement services must be completed online. The only walk-in services available are red decals, permits, new IDs or licenses, and name changes. Drivers must make an appointment for all other services.

Vehicle Centers

There are currently 16 vehicle centers in New Jersey. These MVC locations are tasked with vehicle registration, title, and license plate services. They do not perform any licensing services. All vehicle centers serve people by appointment only.

The specific services offered at vehicle centers include new titles and registrations (inc. transfers) for individuals, bulk dealer and salvage titles, license plate transactions, and registration renewals that cannot be completed online. Any renewals that can be completed online will not be processed at vehicle centers.

Road Testing Locations

There are 14 road testing MVC locations within New Jersey. Many of the road testing locations are also licensing centers. The road testing locations allow drivers to take the driving tests for private, commercial, and motorcycle licenses. Not all of the road testing locations will offer all of these services. For example, the Cape May location only offers a basic auto test, and it only offers this test on Wednesdays.

Inspection Locations
