Finding a DMV Office

New York State has roughly 120 DMV offices throughout the state. However, it should be noted that many license services can be performed online. For example, most license renewals can be taken care of online. Drivers should take care of their licenses online, by mail, or through a drop box if possible.Visiting a DMV office in-person requires a reservation, which can be made online.

Getting a License for the First Time

If you are 16 and a resident of New York, you can get a learner’s permit. To get a learner’s permit, you must pass a written test. Once you’ve obtained your learner’s permit, you have to drive under the supervision of a licensed adult. You must also take a driver education course before you can apply for a full driver’s license. If you are applying for a full driver’s license, you must pass a road test to obtain it.

Renewing Your License

As previously mentioned, most people who want to renew a driver’s license in New York can do so online. You only need to go to a DMV office in-person if you are upgrading your license from a standard version to an Enhanced version or a REAL ID, if you want to update your photo, or if you want to change the class of your license. If you are eligible to renew online, you can also renew by mail. Drivers who are renewing their licenses online or by mail must submit a completed vision test that was administered by a licensed healthcare professional. If you go to the DMV in person, you must take a vision test at the office.

Do You Need a Real ID?

Drivers in New York do not need to upgrade their licenses to REAL IDs. However, it is recommended that they do so. Starting on October 1, 2021, a standard driver’s license will not be accepted when attempting to board domestic flights. It will also not be accepted when attempting to enter certain federal buildings. Only an Enhanced ID or a REAL ID will work.

Upgrading a Probationary License

In New York, first-time driver’s license holders will have to go through a probationary period. This period lasts for six months. Your license will be suspended for 60 days if you are convicted of the following:

  • Using a mobile phone
  • Using a portable electronic device
  • Speeding
  • Street racing
  • reckless driving
  • Following too closely
  • Any two other moving violations

When the 60-day suspension is over, the driver will have another six-month probationary period. If the driver is convicted of the listed offenses during the second probationary period, their license will be suspended for at least six months. Afterwards, they will have to serve yet another probationary period.

Replacing a Lost or Stolen License

You can replace a lost or stolen license quickly and easily in New York. You can do so either online or by mail at this address:

NYS Department of Motor Vehicles

It is not necessary for you to submit a vision test.
