Changing Your Address in Rhode Island: The Basics
Rhode Island, like all other states, requires people to notify the state when they have changed addresses. This requirement applies to people moving to the state or just within the state. Many states give citizens 30 days or more to provide the state government with their new address. Rhode Island, on the other hand, only gives people 10 days to update their addresses. Thankfully, the state also makes it easy for people to update their addresses, as this can be done online, in person, or via mail.
Changing Your Address When Moving to Rhode Island From Another State
If you are moving to Rhode Island from another state, you must update both your address and your vehicle’s registration. The only way to do this is to get a new license and registration at a Rhode Island DMV location.
You will need to take the written and vision tests to get a Rhode Island license. You will also need to submit proof of identity and proof of residence. Proof of identity includes:
- Valid driver’s license from another state
- Valid passport
- Valid state-issued ID
Proof of residence includes:
- Lease or mortgage statements
- Government-issued documents with your current address
- Bank statements
- Utility bills
To get a Rhode Island registration, you will have to submit proof of valid insurance and a registration application.
Changing Your Address When Moving Within Rhode Island
It is much simpler to update your address if you are moving within Rhode Island than if you are moving from another state. As previously mentioned, you can update your address online, via mail, or in person.
If you choose to update your address in person, you can do so at any DMV location or at participating AAA locations within the state. You will need to bring your current license, as you will have to surrender it when you get your new license with your updated address. You will need to complete and submit a license application.
If you are submitting an address change request online, you can do so on this site.
If you want to update your address via mail, you will need to send a Change of Address form. This form must be mailed to the following address:

600 New London Avenue
Cranston RI 02920
