Application for South Carolina Title and/or Registration

Transferring a vehicle title is an important part of the process of buying or selling a vehicle in all states, including South Carolina. You must have the seller sign the title over to you and include the price, date of sale, and odometer reading on the back of the title. You’ll also need to fill out a Title Application (SCDMV Form 400). To complete the form, you’ll need to certify that you have insurance and provide information about having paid the sales tax.

Application for Certified Copy of Title

You can also obtain a certified copy of your title by mail or in-person if you’ve lost it. If applying by mail, specify that you need a certified copy, or you’ll receive a standard copy. You complete Title Application (SCDMV Form 400) including current odometer and lien information. You must also provide identification and pay $15. If applying by mail, send the information to:

Application for Copy of Driver Record

First, determine whether a summary, which only lists your points, will suffice or whether you need a complete copy of your record. You can check your points for free online. A certified copy of your three-year or 10-year driving record will cost you $6 and may also be obtained online.

You also can obtain a copy of your three-year or 10-year driving record by mail by completing Request for Driver Information (SCDMV Form MV-70). You mail the form with a check or money order for $6 to

You can renew your driver’s license or ID card online every other time in most cases. You must submit evidence of a vision test within the last 12 months. The cost is $25. You can also renew by mail using Renew a Driver’s License by Mail (SCDMV Form DL-63). You mail the form with your check to

Application for a South Carolina Driver License or Identification Card

If you’re a beginner driver, you’ll have to follow the procedures for first-driver licenses. If, however, you have recently moved into the state from another state, you can receive a South Carolina license or ID card by forfeiting your old license/ID card. You must do this in person at a DMV office. Bring with you documents proving citizenship or immigration status, your social security number, and proof of current residence. For a driver’s license, you’ll have to pass a vision test.
