What Are the Basics?
When you move, regardless of whether you are moving within the state or interstate, you must notify the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security to change your address on your driver’s license and your county clerk’s office to change your vehicle registration.
How Do I Change My Address If I Am Moving Within Tennessee?
You can change your address on both your driver’s license online and registration online in many counties. You will need to have your Zip code, driver’s license number, Social Security number, new address, and email address for confirmation to change your address on your driver’s license. You’ll need the license plate numbers and VIN to change your address on the registration.
You may also change the address on your driver’s license by mail or at a self-service kiosk. If you need a new license, you’ll have to pay a fee.
To make the driver’s license change by mail send the following information:
- Full name
- Date of birth
- Driver License Number
- Social Security Number
- Old address that appears on current driver license
- New address
- County of your new address
Requests must be mailed to:

1150 Foster Avenue
Nashville, TN 37243

In many counties, you may also change your address on your registration by mail or in person.
How Long Do I Have to Complete This?
You must make the change within 10 days.
How Do I Change My Address If I Am Moving To Tennessee from Another State?
If you are moving to Tennessee from another state, you’ll need to obtain a Tennessee driver’s license. You go in person to a full-service driver services location. Bring with you:
- Your valid out-of-state license
- Proof of citizenship or lawful permanent residency
- A document supporting your name change if there has been one
- Two proofs of Tennessee residency
- Proof of Social Security number, either Social Security card or recent payroll stub or 1099
If you have a valid license from another state you’ll only have to take a vision test and surrender your out-of-state license to get a Tennessee license.
You’ll also need to register your vehicle in Tennessee. To do that, you’ll go in-person to your county clerk’s office. Bring with you:
- Your out-of-state registration
- Proof that you’ve passed an emissions test in Tennessee
- Name and address of lienholder, if applicable
- Proof of identity and proof of residency
How Long Do I Have to Complete This?
You must complete the change of address within 30 days of your move.
