One of the most important questions to answer is if the state of Utah uses a points system for driving records. Quite a few states utilize a points system, but some states do not. The state of Utah does use a points system and the Driver License Division handles driving records in this state. It is important to mention the fact that your age is a factor in the number of points that can cause your driver’s license to be suspended in Utah and how long you will not have driving privileges if your license does get suspended. Of course, the seriousness of the charges is also a factor in determining this, too.

You should know that the number of points added to your driving record for a certain traffic ticket may vary by a maximum of 10% based on the situation in which you got the ticket. It is important to keep this in mind regarding Utah traffic violations. The starting number of points you get for texting and driving is 50 points and you also get 50 points if you run a red light. However, if you follow behind another vehicle too closely, you receive 60 points on your driving record.

In the event that you fail to yield right of way, you get 60 points on your driving record. Speeding is another common traffic violation and you receive 35 points if you go between one and 10 MPH over the speed limit. If you go between 11 and 20 MPH over the speed limit, you get 55 points, and going 21 MPH or more above the speed limit gets you 75 points. Impeding traffic also gets you a total of 50 points on your driving record. You can learn more about these traffic violations in Utah here.

The State of Utah and Driver’s License Suspension

There are many punishments you can receive for traffic violations. Getting your driver’s license suspended is one of the most severe punishments in any state, including Utah. Utah drivers under the age of 21 get their driver’s license suspended for between a month and a year if they accumulate 70 points or even more than that in a three-year time span. For Utah drivers over the age of 21, they get between a 3-month and one-year driver’s license suspension if they rack up at least 200 points or more in a three-year time span. You will have to go through the License Reinstatement process in Utah if you get your driver’s license suspended.
