Common Questions
How long is a passport valid, and does it need to have at least 6 months of validity remaining?
Passports issued to adults over age 16 are valid for 10 years, and passports for children age 15 and under are valid for 5 years. Many countries require that your passport be valid for at least six months past your date of entry, so it is recommended to renew your passport at least 8 months before it expires
How do I make an appointment at a passport agency or center?
You must have an appointment to go in person to a passport agency or center. Appointments are limited, and there is no guarantee that one will be available. Call 1-877-487-2778 to schedule an appointment
How do I apply for or renew a passport for an adult or a minor under 18?
All children under 16 must appear in person to apply. A parent (preferably both) must be present and sign the passport application. Follow the step-by-step process for children under 16 from the State Department to ensure you have the proper forms and documents.
What should I do if my passport is lost or stolen?
If your passport is lost or stolen, you should report it immediately to the U.S. Department of State. You can do this online, by phone, or by mail.
Can children age 15 and younger renew their passports?
Children age 15 and younger cannot renew their passports and must go through the minor passport procedure to get a new one. Children age 16 and older whose last passport was issued before their 16th birthday will need to do the new passport procedure to get their first adult passport.
